The RLSS UK Qualifications Level 3 Emergency Paediatric First Aid (EPFA) qualification covers a wide range of CPR and emergency first aid skills, equipping the first aider to administer first aid to children and infants (babies).
The one-day Emergency Paediatric First Aid qualification is Ofqual, CCEA and Qualification Wales accredited and valid for three years after the date of assessment. It is suitable for anyone who has contact or works with children and infants (babies).
The Emergency Paediatric First Aid course content can be covered within 6 hours and can be delivered in one-day or split into smaller sessions over a 4-week period from the start of the course.
The EPFA course consists of practical work and theoretical classroom work, as well as a practical and multiple-choice theory assessment of CPR and first aid.
Prerequisites to do an Emergency Paediatric First Aid Course
Candidates must be a minimum of 16-years-old at the time of taking the Emergency Paediatric First Aid assessment, and no prior first aid knowledge is required.

Everyone! Individuals and organisations are advised to take an Emergency Paediatrics First Aid course to provide and deliver emergency first aid skills to children and infants (babies) within their homes or workplaces.
Emergency Paediatric First Aid Course Content
A range of subjects are covered within the Emergency Paediatric First Aid course, including:
- Understanding the role of the paediatric first aider
- How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is suffering from shock
- How to assess an emergency situation and act safely and effectively
- How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who has a foreign body airway obstruction
- How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is wounded and bleeding

Emergency Paediatric First Aid Assessment Criteria
The RLSS UK Emergency Paediatric First Aid course consists of practical work and theoretical classroom work. There is a practical assessment on CPR and first aid, and all assessment criteria must be achieved to pass the Emergency Paediatric First Aid course.
Renewal Process for an Emergency Paediatric First Aid Certificate
To renew an Emergency Paediatric First Aid certificate, candidates must re-qualify by being assessed against all learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the qualification. A renewal is achieved by redoing the initial 6-hours of course content.
