The Paediatric First Aid course is a two-day first aid qualification that covers a range of CPR and first aid skills specifically for children and infants (babies) – because their first aid needs differ from those of adults.
The Paediatric First Aid course is for anyone over 16 that has contact or works with, children and infants (babies). After completing an RLSS UK PFA course, candidates receive a Level 3 Paediatric First Aid qualification.
RLSS UK’s Paediatric First Aid training is CIMSPA endorsed, which means it has been quality-assured by CIMSPA. RLSS UK is an active member of the First Aid Awarding Organisation Forum (FAAOF) whose remit is to collaborate on best practice and maintain quality to ensure the integrity and currency of regulated qualifications.
About the Paediatric First Aid (PFA) Course
The RLSS UK Qualifications Level 3 Paediatric First Aid (PFA) qualification covers a wide range of CPR and first aid skills, equipping the first aider to administer first aid to children and infants (babies).
The two-day Paediatric First Aid qualification is Ofqual, CCEA and Qualification Wales accredited and valid for three years after the date of assessment. It is suitable for anyone who has contact or works with children and infants (babies).
The Paediatric First Aid course content can be covered within 12 hours and can be delivered in two-days or split into smaller sessions over a 7-week period from the start of the course.
The PFA course comprises practical work and theoretical classroom work, as well as a practical and multiple-choice theory assessment of CPR and first aid.
Prerequisites to do a Paediatric First Aid Course
Candidates must be a minimum of 16-years-old at the time of taking the Paediatric First Aid assessment, and no prior first aid knowledge is required.

- How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is wounded and bleeding
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with a suspected fracture and a dislocation
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with a chronic medical condition or sudden illness
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with burns or scalds
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with a head, a neck, and a back injury

Paediatric First Aid Assessment Criteria
The RLSS UK Paediatric First Aid course comprises practical work and theoretical classroom work. There is a practical assessment on CPR and first aid, and all assessment criteria must be met to pass the Paediatric First Aid course.
Renewal Process for a Paediatric First Aid Certificate
To renew a Paediatric First Aid certificate, candidates must re-qualify by being assessed against all learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the qualification. A renewal is achieved by redoing the initial 12 hours of course content.
